Client:
West Australian Government, Water Corporation Alkimos Water Alliance wastewater treatment scheme.
Location:
Alkimos on the coast of Western Australia some 40 km north-north-west of the Perth CBD.
The Alkimos wastewater scheme required the construction of a 3.7km long ocean outlet pipeline laid following excavation and clearing of the pipeline route. Sea and weather conditions make operation at Alkimos extremely challenging due in part to the exposed nature of the Western Australian coastline to the Indian Ocean.
In late 2008, CDC deployed its brand new containerised jack-up platform to the Alkimos project. This unit was commissioned in Europe by CDC and was especially designed for the demands of the Alkimos project. The CDC jack-up is the only unit of its type presently operating in the southern hemisphere and can be disassembled into separate ISO size box units which can in turn be shipped as if they were conventional shipping containers.
The jack-up unit is capable of operating with a payload of 250 tons and can jack itself from the seafloor in depths up to 35m while operating at full payload at 22.5m depth. The work platform was able to sit clear of the tide in difficult seas and ensure production could continue in sea conditions where conventional floating dredge units would be forced to suspend operations.
Excavation of the pipeline route was a seven-day-a-week, 24 hour operation with only limited time available to complete the project. To undertake the excavation of the pipeline route, CDC operated their Komatsu PC1100 excavator fitted with a custom-built 27m, super-long reach boom and arm attachment. The Komatsu is fitted with the latest generation 3D GPS digging aid system to ensure maximum efficiency during the excavation programme.
CDC consulted with both the client and the Environmental Protection Authority to ensure that all operations were completed within strict environmental guidelines in place for the project.
