CDC were contracted in mid 2009 to supply their 250 ton jack-up barge and Komatsu 120 ton PC 1100 super-long reach excavator to dredge at Australia’s premier naval industry hub being developed at Osborne, South Australia.
At the home of the Collins Class Submarine, South Australia is investing over $300 million in state-owned infrastructure at the hub to support ASC to deliver the Royal Australian Navy’s next In generation $8 billion Air Warfare Destroyers and attract other shipbuilding and repair opportunities.
The Jack-up and Komatsu unit operated on a 24-hour, six-day per week basis for the duration of the project that lasted some three months. Dredged material was loaded directly into 500 cm3 capacity barges for removal to the dump area.
CDC deployed a specialist digging attachment onto their Komatsu unit to meet the clients requirement to dredge up to a depth of 21m LAT where tidal movements are upwards of 2m.
